Under thread

Bobbin thread. In embroidery, tensions are not adjusted evenly as for construction sewing. Both bobbin thread and top thread will be seen on the back side of the embroidery; bobbin thread should not be seen on the top. Standard embroidery is done with a lock stitch, which requires both an upper and a lower thread. The under thread locks the top thread of the embroidery.
