Grain

The yarn directions on woven fabric. The lengthwise or straight grain follows the warp. The crossgrain or crosswise grain follows the filling. Off-grain describes the fabric when the filling is not at right angles to the warp. Diagonal to the grain is the bias; fabric stretches most on the bias.

If you’ve ever had a pair of pants that twisted around your leg, chances are good the pattern was cut off grain.

Embroidery Tip

  • To create 5mm or smaller keyboard lettering that’s crisp and clean, use a smaller needle, such as an 8/60 with a thinner, 60-weight thread. The principle behind changing the needle size is to reduce the size of the hole the needle leaves in the garment. Using a thinner thread minimizes the chance for thread movement.
