Backlash

Free spinning of the bobbin when the machine suddenly stops or slows. Metal bobbins have a greater tendency to spin and fly back when the machine stops. Some bobbin cases may have a backlash spring which acts as a braking device. When using sideless or paper bobbins, the backlash spring can sometimes push the bobbin too close to the hook, especially when damp weather causes it to swell. As a result, many operators prefer to remove this brake when using a prewound paper bobbin.

Embroidery Tip

  • A fact of embroidery is that eventually, for various reasons, you’ll run into situations when you have to remove stitches. Use Peggy’s Stitch Eraser on the back of your embroidery and then use duct tape to pull away the top stitching.
