Backlash

Free spinning of the bobbin when the machine suddenly stops or slows. Metal bobbins have a greater tendency to spin and fly back when the machine stops. Some bobbin cases may have a backlash spring which acts as a braking device. When using sideless or paper bobbins, the backlash spring can sometimes push the bobbin too close to the hook, especially when damp weather causes it to swell. As a result, many operators prefer to remove this brake when using a prewound paper bobbin.

Embroidery Tip

  • Test sewing not only verifies the design, it can determine if your machine tensions set properly, thread colors work with the design and the fabric, the stabilizers are appropriate, the needle is the correct one for the thread and fabric, and that the correct design transferred properly to the machine.
